Personality
Daniel's main motivations is his thirst for knowledge and his sense of morality. He is first and foremost an explorer, both an academic and an adventurer. He is equally capable of jumping headfirst into danger, and of spending weeks poring over ancient tomes. His thirst for knowledge does not only present itself through bookishness and research, but also through personal interaction and hands-on investigation. He is extremely curious, and will give his rapt attention to anything that catches his interest, often to the point of forgoing sleep or food.
He has a keen sense of right and wrong, and a reverence for life in all forms. He will always strive to find a peaceful solution, historically an idealist and a diplomat. He exercises intense empathy and understanding, he comforts people in need, gently supportive and reassuring. However, over the years, struggling with loss, grief and failure, he has grown less forgiving, less patient, less trusting. He is still however fiercely loyal and passionate about protecting people, but he has become more willing to use whatever means necessary, and to destroy those who have shown themselves to be enemies.
As for his methods, he is incredibly determined, passionate, and extremely reckless when it comes to his own safety. He is not afraid to take action, to stand up for what's right, and to question and defy any authority figure regardless of whether he answers to them or not. He can be brutal and even vengeful, but while he can be incredibly stubborn, he is also capable of putting aside his own issues for the greater good.
On an personal level, he can be incredibly caring, patient, forgiving, supportive and loyal. He can also be, well, not. While he encourages others to open up, he is not always so quick to do so himself. This, combined with the fact he has a tendency to ramble about complicated matters at length, can often make him a little tricky to relate to. He has a sarcastic sense of humour, and particularly since his descension has proved himself to be somewhat snippish and occasionally negative. He will however always be there for his friends, to joke around or to comfort, or more likely to rescue them from some terrible danger.
He is incredibly hard on himself, judging himself by incredibly high standards and remembering his failures rather than his successes. He feels losses deeply, though he tends to keep such feelings to himself, folding in on himself rather than seeking comfort. He cares very strongly for his friends and family, and so to lose them or to feel like he's failed them tears him apart.
