Not for the first time, I have found myself stranded on an unfamiliar planet. Today is the 12th of Cloudreach, which is roughly equivalent to May, two days after my arrival here in Thedas. When I was home, it was January (Wintermarch) 25th, 2004. Here the year 9:44, in the dragon age - the ninth century of their calendar.
I arrived from a dream, through something the locals call rifts in the veil between worlds. I don't have enough information to determine what this could be - inter-dimensional travel seems likely. I don't seem to have been brought here on purpose, nor am I the only one. In addition to other humans, I was also brought through alongside a dozen creatures the locals call demons, which we fought and sent back through the rift. I was injured, but thankfully they've got some impressive healing technology here, though they refer to it as magic.
The city I arrived in is called Amaranthine, but we did not remain there. After resting, we set off by ship to a city called Kirkwall. It's one of the bases of an organisation called the Inquisition, which I am informed is less ominous than it sounds, and where all who arrive through the rifts (known as "rifters") are sent.
This seems to be partly for logistical reasons, but also because upon our arrival, we had something called "anchor shards" appear in our hands. I've yet to get a good explanation for what this actually is, except describing it as raw magic capable of closing rifts. It can be quite painful, and eventually lethal, but being with other shardbearers alleviates these problems, hence collecting us all in one place.
Upon arrival in Kirkwall, I was given room and board, and agreed to help with the research division of the Inquisition. I was also given a crystal that seems to work like a radio or a phone, capable of transmitting your voice to individuals, groups, or every crystal owner.
There's much more to document, but for now I am focusing on working my way through the local library - thankfully quite large - to gain a better overview of this planet and its culture, as well as the current conflict. True to form, I seem to have stumbled right into a war. Just another Tuesday, right?
